How Shy Are You When It Comes to Self Promotion?

Is your shyness holding you back from achieving the success you want in your business? Perhaps it's become a real obstacle to getting the growth you hoped for?

Here is a little test you can take to see how you rate on the Shy Self Promotion Scale. Hint: When you're answering a question do not dwell to long on it. Give the answer that honestly feels correct for you right now.

1. When you meet someone for the first time at a business meeting, do you:
Greet them warmly and eagerly let them know about you and what you do?
Give the person one of your business cards after they ask, or give you one of theirs?
Usually say hello, and then simply listen and observe what’s going on around you?

2. When you want to get new clients, do you:
Call people you don’t know and ask them to buy what you have to offer?
Prefer to offer your services or products to people you know, or to those who were referred to you?
Use mainly advertisement to let people know about your products or service?

3. When asked about your business, do you:
Enthusiastically talk about what you do in a way that excites the other person?
Share a description of what you do and leave it at that?
Say very little for fear of “putting your foot in your mouth”?

4. On an airplane flight, do you:
Strike up a conversation with your seat mate for most of the trip?
Read a book?
Listen to music through headphones?

5. When you think about asking for referrals for your business, do you:
Get very excited and smile from ear to ear?
See it as a necessary way of growing?
Think it’s unprofessional and too aggressive?

6. You’ve created your prospect list, do you:
Send an introductory letter and follow-up with a phone call?
Send the letter and include a postage paid response card?
Wait to see who contacts you?

7. When you are watching TV or listening to the radio and you hear a promotional piece that really captures your attention, do you:
Quickly capture the concept and began to see how you can create something similar for your business?
File the concept away in your mind for future reference?
Acknowledge the cleverness of the promotional piece but seem to get a sense of anxiety just thinking about doing something similar?

8. You’ve been offered an opportunity to highlight your business at your Chamber of Commerce Meeting by speaking to the group, do you:
Say yes to the offer and immediately begin to prepare for your speech?
Say yes, begin to prepare but do so with a bit of trepidation?
Politely decline the offer and fret over your decision a long time, wishing you had the courage to just do it?
